Today I updated the scouting database running on my website - FIRSTObjective.org and I also decided to add some new features to the scouting system.
Right now the "Lunacy Scout" gives you information regarding any FRC team of your choosing, however I am adding some analysis information for any given event (regional / district event). I should have the new features in place in the next day or two. I also plan on adding a feature to allow selection of several teams and have it generate a report that can be printed.
Tomorrow we get to "un-bag" our robot and do some tweaking. This is the first time we've been able to touch our machine since leaving Traverse City 3 weeks ago. We've learned a lot from watching the competition over the weeks and have some things in mind to work on.
Check back tomorrow for an update on our "tweaking" progress and new changes to FIRST Objective.

Scouting Data
For the past 2 years I have been compiling data from regional events and providing an online analysis for anyone to use. Actually last year was the first year that I had the info online, and I've been intending to do the same thing this year.
This year the data is not complete; match data from the Buckeye regional is very sparse, to put it mildly. I've managed to find all the other data and I'll be making a 2009 Lunacy Scouting tool available on my website very soon.
You can view my website at: firstobjective.org, although you'll need to join to have access to the scouting data. It's free, painless, spamless and you'll be joining a community interested in spreading the word of FIRST.
Follow my blog for more details; I plan to have it active before the weekend.

Quick Reminder
This is a quick reminder for people that are new to FIRST and also to all the people that have had experience with FIRST. Please check out my website: FIRSTObjective.org. This site targets both the FIRST community and also those who do not know about FIRST (teachers, school administrators, government officials, etc).
FIRST Objective is trying hard to get more schools involved in FIRST, but it takes the help of people already involved in FIRST. We have many team promo videos on our site, but we need more! If you have videos that you feel promote your team or FIRST in any way, please link them in on FIRST Objective. The easiest way is if they are already on YouTube.
If you are not already involved in FIRST, then check out FIRST Objective to learn more about what we do and what FIRST is all about.

FIRST Objective 2.0
Okay, it's time to get back to blogging again.
Over the summer I have taken some time to give my website www.firstobjective.org a new look. I've had some people suggest that I spruce up the colors and make the front end a bit more simple.
So, I've tried to do just that. I've also added a nifty Google Lively chat room for anyone interested in chatting about FIRST in a virtual world (similar to Second Life).
There is also a Google map that will allow teams and students to place a marker and some info. Hopefully teams that would welcome outside students can be matched up with students in an area that are looking for a team.
I've also started the bare bones of a FIRST wiki that is intended to explain FIRST to people that are learning about it for the first time.
Anyhow, if you haven't been to FIRST Objective in a while, go check it out.

I got nothing
I'm really trying hard to be devoted to writing something every day on this blog. I've had all day and I just can't think of anything new to write about.
This afternoon I watched IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational) on NASA TV, and was very inspired by the last matches. At that time I figured I'd write some great analysis or match review, but now it seems a little late for any FIRST enthusiasts that may read this, and maybe a little too in depth for folks that are new to FIRST. For those wondering, IRI is an off-season robotics invitational that is played using the same game that was used this year (FIRST Overdrive). It is the largest off-season event held anywhere in the world (as far as I know). I wrote a piece about IRI a week or two ago; if you are interested you should be able to find it in the archives.
I guess I'll stick in a plug for my website. Whether you are new to FIRST or not, please check out my website. It serves 2 purposes; it is a community for FIRST enthusiasts to gather, share stories, videos and photos, and it is also a tool to help schools, sponsors and government officials to better understand FIRST. Please check it out and join if you feel I am doing a good job. You'll never get spam or anything unwanted, except an occasional newsletter. I am in the process of planning some major modifications, as it hasn't had a "face-lift" in several months.

Thank you.

Two Weeks Gone
Wow, it's already been 2 weeks since our competition in West Michigan. In one way it's been wonderful to have some time to do other things, in another it's been sad not preparing for another competition.
Never-the-less, FIRST has not been "back-burnered" in my mind. We have been talking about ways of getting some FIRST Lego League teams started in our school, and I think we'll start acting on some of those thoughts this week. This week is spring break for the kids, wooo hooo! But I still have to go to work....
We've also been working on ways to get FIRST and FIRST Objective noticed in general areas of the Internet. I've added FIRST Objective to MySpace, so if you have a MySpace account and would like to be friends with FIRST Objective, go to http://www.myspace.com/firstobjective
FIRST Objective has a few friends, none of which I believe are interested in high-school robotics...
Look forward to more regular posts in the future. I needed a little time to catch my breath.

week one - complete
It's been a while since my last post; it always seems I never have enough time to write, and it seems that way right now. Nevertheless, I need to write an short update.
We shipped our robot almost 2 weeks ago, and I'm still busier than ever. Mostly with updates and modifications to my websites. I run the site: http://www.firstobjective.org which is a site devoted to seeing a day when every school has a FIRST team.
I also run a sub-site called My Team at http://www.firstobjective.org/myteam. This is a site for FRC teams to help them find their best alliance partners. Last year I compiled a database of statistics from each regional, and I'm doing the same thing again this year. However, over the last week or so I've been able to make this tool available not only to Internet users, but cell phone users that have Internet access.
I'm trying to encourage people to join FIRST Objective by requiring them to join before giving them access to My Team. It hasn't really worked as planned, but I haven't really had the time to properly promote these sites.
Anyhow, our first regional is in 2 weeks and today was the end of the first week of regionals. I watched some exciting new teams on an Internet web-cast today, and I also watched a few upsets too. This is certainly going to be an exciting season. Stay tuned as I hope to post more frequently in the days to come.

Update - January 22, 2008
Wow, it's been almost a week since my last post. There hasn't been much action to report on; we had a meeting last Thursday for a couple hours and we haven't met since.
Due to yesterday's holiday and today being a snow day, we haven't made a lot of new progress. Last week on Thursday we did write a sample program that runs both autonomous/hybrid mode and a section that runs the drive code that is used to interpret the commands sent from the robot drive team through the radio control.
It's now 2 weeks into the build season, and we have 4 weeks to go. We have our autonomous/hybrid mode flow charted and will begin on that tomorrow night. We're feeling pretty good about where we are right now.
Look for more pictures to show up on my Flickr site soon.
For anyone that may be reading my blog, I am also the designer, developer and administrator for a website that is devoted to introducing people to FIRST. It is a community of students, teachers, mentors and parents that are willing to post videos, pictures, stories, etc. regarding their experiences in FIRST. No matter if you are already involved in FIRST or not, please check out my site; it truly is for everyone!
